The Corner Plaza: The Creative Lens
The Corner Plaza stands at the heart of Ogden, a vibrant testament to the transformative power of public spaces. This dynamic hub represents a pivotal element in the burgeoning Nine Rails Creative District. Strategically placed, it not only bridges physical gaps but also connects the artistic pulse of the city. The Corner Plaza acts as a creative lens which draws visitors in and then reflects them into the surrounding district.
Background
Nearly eight years ago, the master plan for the Nine Rails Creative District was conceived, envisioning a thriving arts enclave in Ogden. The Corner Plaza emerged as a critical piece of this puzzle. It is nestled strategically between the already vibrant 25th Street and the budding Nine Rails district. As a result, the plaza needed to disseminate arts and events information while also bridging these two vital areas. The plaza functions as both an informational beacon and a welcoming gateway.
Io LandArch worked with the City of Ogden to create the Nine Rails Creative District Master Plan, pictured above. The Master Plan identified the official boundaries of the district, established guidelines for streetscape improvements and development patterns, and identified priorities for phased improvements, public art, and tactical urbanism.
The Challenge
With budget constraints in mind, our challenge was clear. We needed to craft a versatile, iconic, and artistic space capable of accommodating a diverse range of activities. The plaza had to change public perception, acting as a gateway connecting Ogden’s iconic 25th Street with the blossoming Nine Rails Creative District. Furthermore, it needed to serve as a dynamic hub for events like the farmers market, the Twilight Concert Series, and the beloved Christmas Village – all within tight budget constraints.
The Christmas Village lights up the Corner Plaza each winter.
The Concept
Inspired by the striking colors and geometry of the “New Range” sculpture by artist Hou-De-Sousa, we envisioned the Corner Plaza as a lens. We aimed to draw people into the space, altering their perception and redirecting them towards the wonders beyond. The play of light and geometry served as the foundation of this innovative concept.

The Value of Creative Placemaking
Constraints often yield great design. In this case, limited resources lead to creative optimization of the space. Because of this constraint, we kept the ground-plane relatively simple, with compacted stone-chat defining two key gathering spaces. Modest seating structures and strategic plantings further delineate space. LED strip lights and festoon lighting enhance spatial qualities, adding vibrancy after dark. By keeping the foundational elements of the design simple, we were able to re-direct larger portions of the budget to the most impactful elements:
- the New Range Sculpture, providing a visual landmark,
- oversized hot-pink geometric benches inviting gatherings,
- and the sculptural pin-up wall, merging function with artistry.
More than just a plaza, the Corner Plaza celebrates Ogden’s thriving creative spirit, a testament to the community’s belief in its potential. It begins a journey, exemplifying what can be achieved when a community unites to realize a shared vision. As we grow in this new chapter, let’s nurture our creative spirit, with the arts at the forefront of Ogden’s ongoing growth and transformation. Together, we’ll continue to shape vibrant, meaningful communities for generations to come.
