It is April and lots of plants are already growing or blooming here in Utah! In this blog, we’ve outlined a basic checklist for you for critical Spring maintenance tasks.
Because landscapes are living, once your landscape is designed and installed, the work isn’t over. Maintaining your landscape is critical to its ongoing function and beauty.

The Bimat Residence is located in Ogden, Utah. The homeowners envisioned a modern, xeric landscape to frame their newly built home. Their goals were low-water usage and a desert aesthetic complimented with a carefully chosen palette of native plantings. This landscape blends with its surrounding ecosystem, using materials of concrete and wood in earthy, desert tones.
Spring Landscape Maintenance Checklist
- Turn on your irrigation system and run through each zone, one at a time, inspecting for leaks.
- Visually inspect drip emitters to make sure they are working. Make repairs as needed.
- Cut back perennials and grasses – all the way to the ground.
- Apply new mulch to beds. We prefer composted bark mulch, sometimes called soil pep (2-3 inches of mulch is ideal).
- Cut back any shrubs that you might have missed the previous fall.
- Divide overgrown perennials. Most perennials continuously grow and spread, so every couple of years you will probably need to divide them – especially if they are looking overcrowded. Think of it as free plants to move around the garden or share with your neighbors.

After being used as a home and later a small restaurant, the new home of AMD Architecture in Salt Lake City was ready for an update. The design transformed a basic lawn into a blossoming, water-wise garden, requiring different care.

The Butterfly Garden addition to the Annie Taylor Dee Guest Home at McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden, UT provides a quiet contemplative space where individuals can find emotional and spiritual healing through nature. In the spring, maintenance includes irrigation checks, mulching, and cutting back (and dividing as needed) perennials.
