Lester Park

Io’s winning entry into this AIA design competition was inspired by a diagram of Ogden City’s historic rail yard. It features a flowing network of sinuous rail-like paths highlighted by the bold use of color. A central plaza space is anchored by an interpretive roundhouse pavilion. Recycled railroad ties embedded into rolling landscape berms provide seating. A large central viewing/sledding hill provides a central landmark and organizing element. Two smaller mounds, clad in bright colors, are equipped with whimsical climbing and sliding structures, as well as a large climbing net that weaves through the existing tree canopy. Other program elements include an exercise loop, pump track, banked sidewalk murals (for seating and skating), wetland (and winter ice rink), splash pad, and fluid bands of native grassland and meadows – all while preserving the existing mature tree canopy.
