Get to Know the Io LandArch Team: Lindsay Lloyd

For Women’s History Month, we are introducing you to the amazing women on the Io LandArch design team. Meet Lindsay Lloyd, historic landscape specialist and landscape designer.

Lindsay believes that beautiful spaces inspire people to live fulfilling lives, and that historically sensitive design provides context, meaning, and a sense of connectedness to communities. Her lifelong passion for horticulture and historic architecture led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Utah State University and a master’s degree in architectural conservation from the University of Edinburgh.

Why did you study landscape architecture?

I started in civil engineering as a major but decided I wanted to do something that worked more with plants. I still wanted to work with the built environment, though. My end goal was always to pursue a master’s degree in architectural conservation, and landscape architecture fit those criteria.

How did you end up at Io LandArch? What about Io LandArch resonates particularly with you?

My combinations of degrees fit the historic preservation emphasis at Io really well. I appreciate our focus on historic preservation – that is relatively rare in landscape architecture.

Tell me about the projects you’re most proud of and why. What was your role?

Allen Park CLR – This project was such a good combination of historic architectural and landscape preservation work. The CLR has has had real, tangible meaning and impact as the city decides what to do with the park. I came in about halfway through and worked on editing and compiling, data analysis, and fieldwork for the architectural survey.

Toler-Bain Studio – This project taught me the architectural side of VW and involved A LOT of troubleshooting. I’m happy with how it turned out.

Park City Historic District Design Standards Illustrations – I did the fieldwork and almost all of the illustrations for this project. It’s very satisfying that my sketches (below) are part of the official guidelines!

Across your professional work, what do you enjoy the most?

Planting plans, drawing construction details, historic preservation work

For you, what is the most rewarding part of being a landscape architect?

I like the knowledge that we are contributing to reduction in Kentucky blue grass and an increase in water conservation.

Where do you find inspiration?

Nature, history, architecture, the stories I interact with.

If you could give one piece of advice to women considering pursuing a career in landscape architecture, what would it be?

Don’t be daunted by potential gaps in knowledge. You can learn anything you need to know.

What is a creative project (inside or outside of work) that you are currently excited about?

Currently I am working on writing a novel.
