Io’s winning entry into this AIA design competition was inspired by a diagram of Ogden City’s historic rail yard. It features a flowing network of sinuous rail-like paths highlighted by the bold use of color. A central plaza space is anchored by an interpretive roundhouse pavilion. Recycled railroad ties embedded into rolling landscape berms provide seating. A large central viewing/sledding hill provides a central landmark and organizing element. Two smaller mounds, clad in bright colors, are equipped with whimsical climbing and sliding structures and a large climbing net weaving through the existing tree canopy. Other program elements include an exercise loop, pump-track, banked sidewalk murals (for seating and skating), a wetland (and winter ice-rink), splash pad, and fluid bands of native grassland and meadows – all while preserving the existing mature tree canopy.
