Creating a strong sense of unique identity and pride
Historic Preservation
A critical component of community revitalization is identifying and preserving a community’s unique historic resources, which create a sense of identity and character. While historic buildings are an important aspect of this, identifying and planning for the preservation of entire historic and cultural landscapes is also critical.
Historic districts, streetscapes, parks, plazas, and other contexts, play a vital role in:
- Providing context to historic buildings
- Defining neighborhoods & districts
- Recognizing the cultural influences that create a place
- Understanding defining characteristics & their significance
- Facilitating positive storytelling that provides a powerful connection to community
