Io was originally founded to provide documentation and design services for historic sites.  We have since grown into a full-service design and planning firm, but our passion still lies in documenting historic resources, uncovering the stories that give meaning to these places and helping to interpret that history for future generations.  Io provides research, documentation and design services for historic districts, historic buildings and historic sites including the following:

  • Historic American Landscapes Surveys (HALS)
  • National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Nominations
  • Intensive Level Surveys (ILS)
  • Design Guidelines & Standards for Historic Districts
  • Preservation
  • Rehabilitation
  • Adaptive-Re-Use
  • Historically & Contextually Sensitive New Construction
    • Sites & Landscapes
    • Additions
    • Urban Infill

Some of the historic projects we have worked on include:

  • Wilbur & Company Blacksmith Shop, NRHP Nomination, Eden, UT
  • Union Stockyards HALS, Ogden, UT
  • Fillmore City Cemetery, HALS & NRHP Nomination, Fillmore, UT
  • Stilwell Field HALS, Fort Douglas, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT
  • Long Valley HALS, Washington, UT (In-progress)
  • Center Street National Historic District Design Standards, Logan, UT (In-progress)
  • Master Plan for the Adaptive-Re-Use of the Union Stockyard Site, Ogden, UT

In addition to this list, we have worked on a number of historically sensitive landscape design projects, and are in the process of writing a series of articles about the particulars of historic landscape design movements, and how to re-create and adapt their design strategies for Victorian, Arts & Crafts and Mid-Century Modern homes.
